Do you want to know how to overcome anxiety for good?
You’re not alone!
Young adults are particularly vulnerable to anxiety disorders, with some 1 in 3 aged 13-18 facing an anxiety disorder in their lives.
Learning how to overcome chronic anxiety, however, is not as simple as a Google search. While the suggestions I outline below are proven to help reduce anxiety, if you or someone you love is suffering from extreme anxiety, it is best to seek out professional help.
Anxiety is an incredibly treatable disorder, and with the right help, you can experience near-total relief from painful symptoms.
Here are my five recommended ways to overcome anxiety in your life.
Get Regular Exercise
Despite the fear associated with exercising, it is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety disorders.
Physical exercise raises endorphins and serotonin levels which improve our emotions. Not only that, but our brains are also unable to focus on two things at once, so when we exercise, our minds are preoccupied with the task at hand.
A good goal for physical exercise is to work out three to five times a week, 30 minutes each day. Anything from Yoga to walking is enough to take the sting out of anxiety.
Whatever you do, just make sure you’re staying active. Sedentary lifestyles contribute to anxiety.
Relaxation Techniques
Active progressive relaxation techniques are excellent in reducing anxiety levels. Progressive relaxation can be a variety of activities, but one of my favorites is Yoga. It’s a combination of physical exercise and muscle relaxation, as you tighten your muscles as you hold poses, and then relax them once you let go of the pose.
You can also do these exercises on your own simply lying-in bed. Tighten your muscles as you inhale and then as you let them go you exhale. Repeat this process with each muscle group at least 8 times.
Regardless of what relaxation techniques you invest your time in, if you stay consistent, you’ll notice a change in how quick you are to anxiety. It’s a simple, easy, and free way to overcome anxiety.
Eat a Healthy Diet
When anxiety is at its peak, it’s easy to grab the chips and cookies, instead of foods that are good for us, or simply avoid eating altogether.
Unfortunately, this habit can lead to even more anxiety.
My recommendation is to actively eat a healthy diet. That diet should consist of high protein, lots of vegetables, and fruits.
But focusing on things like protein can help you reduce your anxiety levels since they keep you full and stave off low blood sugar, which can make you even more anxious.
There are also foods like almonds and avocados which can reduce anxiety-producing emotions and increase feel-good hormones in the body.
Get Enough Rest
Getting enough sleep is equally important to overcoming anxiety. None of us are robots, and that includes young adults.
Sleeping at least 7 hours per night is critical if you’re serious about combating anxiety. Our brains aren’t designed to exist off less sleep than that.
Developing a healthy bedtime routine can help you get to sleep more quickly and consistently each night. Reading a book, taking a warm bath, or even drinking some chamomile tea will help you sleep more each night.
